This catalogue is intended to facilitate the location and identification of the music published in Giovanni Battista Pergolesi Opera Omnia, with an indication of doubtful and spurious works as reported in the literature, and an appendix listing works attributed to Pergolesi but omitted from the Opera amnia. On the basis of available information, it appears that of the 148 works in the complete works edition, 69 are misattributed, 49 are of questionable parentage, and only 30 may be considered genuine. In other words, as much as 80% of the Opera Ornnia may not be by Pergolesi.
Clearly, few composers are more in need of a thematic catalogue than Pergolesi. Few have more "spuriosities" to their credit. The present catalogue is a necessary first step that will help, one hopes, in the identification
I of Pergolesiana, true and false. However, full authentication of Pergolesi's output -- to the extent that this may be possible -- must await considerable further research.
The Opera Ornnia is noteworthy not only for its high percentage of mis¬attributions, but also for its errors of omission. The "Appendix," compiled from library holdings and catalogues, and from lists appearing in various monographs, biographies and articles, includes a large number of works attributed to Pergolesi which were omitted from the "complete works edition." It must be emphasized that no attempt has been made to verify the information provided in the references; a study of the sources does not lie within the scope of this catalogue.
