Carl Schachter is widely acknowledged to be one of the leading music theorists of his generation. His influence both as a teacher and through his writings is incalculable. Yet as known to his colleagues students and friends Carl Schachter the man is equally remarkable. The essays in this book reflect both aspects of his influence. Among the many notable scholars with contributions to this volume are Charles Burkhart William Rothstein Joel Lester Hedi Siegel Channan Willner Frank Samaratto and William Renwick.
Co-author of Analysis of Tonal Music: A Schenkerian Approach (Oxford University Press, 1998), and the co-editor of Structure and Meaning in Tonal Music: Festschrift in Honor of Carl Schachter (Pendragon Press, 2006). His articles and reviews have appeared in journals and books including The Music Forum, Music Theory Spectrum, Indiana Theory Review, Intégral, Schenker Studies 2, Trends in Schenkerian Research, and Selected Essays from the Third Schenker Symposium.
He is the former president of the Music Theory Society of New York State and has taught at the Mannes College of Music, New York University, and Columbia University.
Primary areas of interest include Schenkerian analysis and form studies. He has published essays and reviews in Music Analysis, Theory and Practice, Journal of New Music Research, Journal of Music Theory, Schenker Studies 2, Woman and Music, and elsewhere.
In addition to his scholarly work, he has performed extensively as a pianist for comedy improvisation groups in the New York City area. He has also taught at Mannes College and Columbia University. In 1995 he received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the New School University, and in 2008 he received the Outstanding Publication Award of the Society of Music Theory.
Prof. Burstein was President of the Music Theory Society of New York State from 2003-2007, was a member of the Executive Board of the Society for Music Theory from 2006-2009, and is the webmaster for the web site of the Music Program of the CUNY Graduate Center.
