Description

The bi-lingual Massenet: General Catalogue of Works, produced in collaboration with the Internaional Massenet Association and written in French and English, is a complete inventory of the known works of Jules Massenet. It has been produced with the sponsorship of the International Massenet Association. The purpose of this document, written French and translated into English, is to facilitate research, performance, and general knowledge of Massenet’s music. For each work it gives the vocal and/or instrumental nomenclatures (with operatic roles listed by tessitura), the author(s) of associates texts, the location of manuscripts, and other pertinent details. The authors, specialists in nineteenth-century French repertoire, have established listings of works organized by musical genre: opera, sacred music, cantatas and vocal scenes, choruses, incidental music, symphonic music, piano music, and concert songs. The songs, which represent a large part of Massenet’s oeuvre (some 280 titles), have been organized by title as well as by author, along with a summary of songs appearing in cycles, songs for more than one voice, and those found in editions or collections. The Catalogue includes explanatory paragraphs and annotations for each section, a select bibliography, a general index of works and an index of proper names. Appendices contain a biographical chronology; information on such works as Manon (the completely sung version) and L’Histoire de Manon, the composite ballet arranged and orchestrated by Leighton Lucas; the cantatas Louise de Mézières and David Rizzio; as well as the Hymne that remained unpublished until discovered by Hervé Oléon during the research for this Catalogue. Finally, the catalogue’s authors have created a system of DO numbers (Dibbern-Oléon) that in order to establish, for the first time, an exact quantification of Massenet’s works and which will be useful as definitive reference numbers for this oeuvre.

L’objectif de ce catalogue bilingue, produit en collaboration avec L’Association Massenet Internationale, écrit en Français et en Anglais, est de faciliter les recherches, l’exécution et la connaissance générale de la musique de Massenet. Le Catalogue Général Massenet est un inventaire exhaustif des ouvrages connus du compositeur. Pour chaque pièce, il précise, les nomenclatures vocales et/ou instrumentales (en précisant les tessitures des rôles d’opéra), le ou les auteurs des textes associés, la localisation des manuscrits et tout autre détail pertinent. Les auteurs, spécialistes du répertoire français du dix-neuvième siècle, ont établi un classement par genre musical : ouvrages lyriques, musique sacrée, cantates et scènes lyriques, choeurs, musique de scène, musique symphonique, musique pour piano et mélodies. Pour les mélodies, qui représentent une grande partie de l'oeuvre de Massenet, avec près de 280 titres, les auteurs ont procédé à un classement par titre puis par auteur, associé à un récapitulatif des mélodies réunies par cycles, des mélodies polyphoniques et des éditions en recueils. Le Catalogue comporte des paragraphes explicatifs et annotations pour chaque section, une bibliographie sélective , un index général des oeuvres et un index des noms propres. Sont également reproduits en annexes une notice biographique chronologique, des données relatives à des oeuvres telles que Manon (la version intégralement chantée) et le ballet composite L’Histoire de Manon, arrangé et orchestré par Leighton Lucas, les cantates Louise de Mézières et David Rizzio, ou un Hymne inédit laissé à la surprise du lecteur. Les auteurs du catalogue ont établi une numérotation DO (Dibbern-Oléon), permettant une quantification précise des ouvrages référencés, dans un catalogue aux contours jusqu’ici assez flous.

Authors

Hervé Oléon: Musicologist Hervé Oléon began his career as a classical singer, studying with distinguished vocalists including Paul Finel, Michèle Command and Viorica Cortez. His solo engagements have included numerous operas, recitals and oratorios in France, Germany, Italy and the United States. From 2003 to 2009, he worked as a free-lance member of the Chorus of the Opéra National in Paris. Since 2008, he has been the Artistic Director of the Res Lyrica Association which promotes French repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 2013, a vocal ensemble was added to this organization, with Oléon as Music Director for performances in prestigious venues such as the churches of La Madeleine, Saint-Roch and La Trinité in Paris. In 2014, he served as a member of the jury for the 2nd International Singing and Piano Competition in Moscow. In 2015, he became Michel Laplénie’s Assistant Director for the Baroque academy Schola Sagittariana. As a specialist in Jules Massenet and his oeuvre, Hervé Oléon was one of the principal organizers in the Parisian region for centenary commemorations of the composer’s death. He coordinated a series of lecture-concerts and was the curator of the exposition “Pauline Viardot and Jules Massenet: Marie-Magdeleine, at the crossroads” at the Ivan Turgenev European Museum in Bougival (France). He has also serves as a musical critic for several internet sites. The General Assistant Secretary of the International Massenet Association, he is also the Editorial Director of the annual Journal published since the end of 2014. He is an official expert for the Parisian Cour d’Appel and is frequently consulted for questions concerning composers’ publication and moral rights as well as the authentification of musical scores and manuscripts. Hervé Oléon is co-author of Massenet: General Catalogue of Works (Pendragon Press, New York) and is completing the first biography of the vocalist Lucy Arbell, Massenet’s last Muse (to be published at the end of 2016).
Mary Dibbern:

Joined The Dallas Opera as Music Director for Education and Family Programming in June 2012. She is an internationally known specialist in the field of vocal coaching and recital accompaniment, with appearances in Europe, the United States and Asia. Dibbern was graduated summa cum laude from SMU with a Master of Music in accompaniment under the direction of Maestro Paul Vellucci. She resided in France from 1978 to 2009, where she studied with Nadia Boulanger and Pierre Bernac and was guest coach for the Opéra National de Paris, and all of the major French opera companies. She also worked in Switzerland, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, and in Shanghai where she was in charge of musical and language preparation for the first French-language productions. In the US, she was guest coach at Seattle Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera Memphis and Hawai'i Opera Theatre. She was Head of Music at Minnesota Opera for three seasons, where she collaborated closely with composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell on their world premiere "Silent Night" which subsequently won the Pulitzer Price for Music 2012. Mary Dibbern is the author of seven books on French music published by Pendragon Press and is the Editorial Consultant for Musik Fabrik's publications of works by French composer Jacques Leguerney She is a recording artist for Harmonia Mundi France, Claves and Maguelone.
