Mark DeVoto, born Cambridge, MA, in 1940, trained at the Longy School of Music, Harvard College, and Princeton University. A composer and writer, he is an expert on Alban Berg, Debussy, and early 20th century music generally. He edited the revised 4th (1978) and 5th (1987) editions of Walter Piston's Harmony, and prepared the score of Berg's Altenberg op.4, for the Berg complete edition (1997). He has taught at Reed College, the University of New Hampshire, and most recently was Professor of Music at Tufts University, retiring in 2000.
